Today I bring you a compilation of awesome mods for the classic Thinkpads (x20/x30 generation), which also have very cheap replacement parts. This is a great opportunity for tinkering.
(MUST) Install coreboot: A free and open-source firmware that replaces the proprietary BIOS.
Antenna Replacement: Upgrade the existing antennas for potentially better Wi-Fi and Bluetooth reception.
Add an Internal USB Port: This modification allows for the addition of an internal USB dongle, such as for a wireless mouse, without it protruding from the laptop.
Classic Keyboard Mod: Swap the island-style keyboard for the classic 7-row keyboard from the ThinkPad X220 for a different typing experience.
Wi-Fi Card Upgrade: Upgrade the stock Intel 6205 Wi-Fi card to a more modern one, like an Intel 9260, for faster speeds and newer features.
1080p IPS Screen Mod: Change the default screen panel to a full HD 1080p IPS panel for a much sharper and more vibrant display. With coreboot, this might not significantly increase power consumption.
Speaker Mod: A popular modification involves replacing the stock speakers with those from a MacBook Air or iPad for improved sound quality.
3D Printed Parts:
ExpressCard Drawer: Print a small storage drawer that fits into the ExpressCard slot.
2.5" Bay Cover: Print a cover for the 2.5" drive bay, useful if the original is lost or if you’re not using a drive in that bay.
Quad-Core CPU Upgrade: This advanced modification involves desoldering the original CPU and soldering a more powerful quad-core i7-3612QE processor onto the motherboard. Services on sites like Taobao also offer this modification. Be aware that this will significantly increase power consumption by several tens of watts. ¯\(ツ)/¯
eDP Motherboard Mod: An extreme hardware modification that replaces the standard LVDS display connector with an eDP (Embedded DisplayPort) connector, allowing the use of modern, high-resolution laptop screens. This is a complex mod offered by some sellers on platforms like Taobao.
